RICHARD FRANKEL had wrongfully put the Coonoor Club in downtown Coonoor (I have deleted the mislabeled place!)- he had written there: "Located between Sims Park and Gray's Hill. My mother played tennis here in the 40's. I remember the very steep hill by the club close to Chettinad House..coming up the top of the hill on my Enfield I was chased by some pariah dogs,I gunned the bike and made a sharp right turn on to the dirt road and the bike slipped from under me and the dogs gathered around yapping away...needles to say I righted the bike and got away as soon as I could."

I would like to start a list of pupils that went to Hebron High School in Coonoor: Uta Fischer from Germany stayed there 1965-1966, age: 8-9 years old, standards: III-IV Comments: I'm afraid I can hardly remember anything, only that Miss Hall was our principal and that I had flute lessons from a German teacher, Miss Katrin Lipp, who lived and taught somewhere above the main school buildings. And I also remember her sister who was a few years older that me, Cordelia Lipp, who also went to Hebron High School when I was there. I can only remember one name: Sharon, who seems to have been my best friend at school in those days, but I forgot her last name and I wonder if she, or anybody else would remember me!??? That would be great fun! Oh yes, I also remember, that we regularly prayed for a girl who had some serious health problem, but I had never known her, nor do I remember, her name! Ah, another thing that just struck my mind was, that we loved to swing on the log-swing on the playground in front of the Assembly Hall! Does anybody remember: "l-o-g-spells-log!" That is how we all pushed in the same direction at the same time! Another thing I just remembered: we used to sing "Glory, glory halleluja, teacher hit me with the ruler, master hit me with the bamboo stick, he hit me black and blue!" and , very very good indeed! Eating, drinking rice and pani till my belly was a ball" and also: "On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese, there lay my poor meatball, till somebody sneezed! It rolled off the table and onto the floor, and then my poor meatball rolled out of the door! It rolled it the garden and under a bush, and then my poor meatball was nothing but mush!" Now I remember about how strict Miss Hall used to be: she once hit me on my bare bottom, kneeling over, on her bed, because I had often come in the Dining Hall for breakfast, without having brushed my hair! I guess, that I must have always been late and not had enough time left to do my hair! You bet, I always combed it neatly after that! I also remember that I used to hate turnips! I think we used to have them every day! Well, no wonder there were always turnips lying under the table - but far away enough, so that nobody could guess that I had thrown them there! I'm sure everybody who was there remembers how freezing cold and green the water in the swimming pool was, and that it even had tadpoles inside! I also remember that we had won a prize (with a little help from our lucky troll!) for our tidiest dormitory: a midnight feast with ghost stories and sweets! What a treat! One night, when all the teachers had gone to some meeting, one girl of our dormitory licked a whole glass of Marmite empty and was ever so sick after that! I'll let you know if ever I remember something else, no matter what it is!

Till 1974 this used to be the "Hebron High School" in Coonoor! Established in 1899, the School's original purpose included the education of the children of Christian workers. The present "Hebron School" in in Ootacamund was formed by the merger, in 1974, of the two schools run by the "Hebron Schools' Association" - the original "Hebron High School" in Coonoor, and "Lushington Boys' School" in Ootacamund (the latter having links with the "Breeks Memorial School"). "Hebron" is an independent International School recognised by the Government of India with the aim of providing high quality education suitable for children preparing for life and further study within the international community. Whilst the needs of the children of Christian workers are still a priority, "Hebron" now provides for all children. It is completely independent of any church, mission or government and its Christian basis is non-denominational.
